In the event of a tornado, where is the safest place in your home? If there is a hurricane or flood, where do you take your family in the event that you are evacuated by the authorities? What about an earthquake? When I was in grade school, an earthquake drill meant crawling under our desks and waiting for the teacher to give us the okay to come out. It was a short, simple drill, but it could mean all the difference if an earthquake brought the ceiling down.

Of course, we should prepare for what is most likely to hit us. I don´t believe folks in Wyoming need to put their houses on stilts in case of a hurricane, and there isn´t much reason for a person in Southern California to prepare a tornado cellar. There are exceptions of course. On August 11, 1999, a tornado struck downtown Salt Lake , killing one person and injuring a hundred others. My mother always told me that tornados only hit places like Oklahoma and Texas , places that sat on the flatness of the Great Plains, but not Salt Lake, nestled as it is in the Rocky Mountains. But there you have it, a tornado where one never should have been. Does that mean that I´ve made major tornado preparations to defend against the possibility of another? Certainly not. I accept the tornado for the freak occurrence that it was, but I am at least aware of the possibility of its occurrence. In other words, I now believe that I could be confronted by a tornado, and yes, my family does know what to do — just in case.
